PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOTS FOR RESIDENCY APPLICATIONS

ERAS Headshots for Medical Students

Your ERAS photo is often the first impression residency program directors have of you. Make it count with a professional, AAMC-compliant headshot that conveys confidence and competence.

WHAT IS AN ERAS HEADSHOT?

Professional ERAS headshot example

ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) is the centralized application system used by medical students to apply to residency programs across the United States. Your ERAS application includes a professional headshot that program directors see when reviewing your application.

This photo accompanies you through the entire Match process, from initial application screening to interview invitations. Program directors often review hundreds of applications, and a polished, professional headshot helps you stand out and be remembered.

Your ERAS photo should project:

  • Professionalism and competence
  • Approachability and warmth
  • Confidence without arrogance
  • Someone programs want on their team

WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR ERAS HEADSHOT

Your attire should convey professionalism while allowing your personality to come through. Here are evidence-based recommendations from residency program directors.

Recommended

  • Suit jacket or blazer in navy, charcoal, or dark gray
  • Solid color dress shirt in white, light blue, or soft colors
  • Conservative tie (if wearing) in solid or subtle pattern
  • Simple, professional jewelry (small earrings, simple necklace)
  • Natural makeup that enhances without distracting
  • Well-groomed hair styled away from face
  • Clean-shaven or well-groomed facial hair

Avoid

  • White coat - save this for after you match!
  • Scrubs - too casual for application photos
  • Busy patterns or loud colors that distract
  • Stethoscope - considered unprofessional for ERAS
  • Heavy jewelry or distracting accessories
  • Casual clothing (polo shirts, sweaters alone)
  • Wrinkled or ill-fitting clothes

Pro Tip: Bring 2-3 outfit options to your session. We'll review them together and choose what photographs best on camera. Many clients are surprised by which outfit works best!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When should I get my ERAS headshot taken?

I recommend scheduling your session between June and mid-July of your application year. This gives you ample time for retouching and any revisions before ERAS opens in August. Your photo must be taken within 6 months of your application.

Can I use my medical school ID photo?

While technically allowed, I strongly advise against it. Medical school ID photos are rarely flattering and don't meet the quality standards that help you stand out. Program directors notice the difference between a professional headshot and a quick ID photo.

Should I wear my white coat?

No. The consensus among residency program directors is that white coats in ERAS photos appear presumptuous. Save your white coat for after you match. A professional suit or blazer is the appropriate choice.

What background color is best?

Neutral backgrounds (white, light gray, or light blue) are preferred. I offer multiple background options during your session and will help you choose what works best with your skin tone and attire.

How quickly can I get my photos?

Standard turnaround is 5-7 business days. Rush delivery is available if you're on a tight deadline. I always deliver ERAS-ready files formatted to exact specifications.
