Session Guide
What Happens During a Professional Headshot Session? Here's What to Expect
The less you know about what's coming, the more nervous you'll be. Here's a full walkthrough of what a professional headshot session actually looks like, from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.
For a lot of professionals, especially those who don't love being photographed, the anticipation before a headshot session is often the hardest part. Not knowing what to expect can amplify nerves, and nerves show up in photos.
So let's take that uncertainty off the table entirely.
Here's a complete walkthrough of what a session looks like at Marquel Yvette Photography, from the moment you walk in to the moment your images arrive in your inbox.
Before You Arrive
You'll receive a preparation guide in your booking confirmation email. It covers what to wear, how to prepare your skin, and what to bring. Most clients find that taking ten minutes to review it the night before makes a measurable difference in how they feel on the day of the shoot.
I recommend arriving with your makeup already done if you're handling it yourself, or with a clean face if you've added on a makeup session or booked the Executive Package. Have your outfit options already selected, and give yourself about five minutes of extra time so you're not rushed walking in.
When You Arrive: The Consultation (5 to 10 Minutes)
Every session begins with a brief conversation. Not a formal sit-down, just a few minutes to connect before the camera comes out.
I'll ask you about:
- Where the photos will be used (LinkedIn, firm website, speaking bio, media kit)
- The tone you're going for: approachable, authoritative, confident, warm, or some combination
- Your outfit options, so I can help you decide which to shoot first
- Any concerns you have: tension spots, expressions you don't like, past photo experiences that went wrong
That last one matters more than most people expect. Knowing what went wrong in previous photos lets me solve for it before the camera comes out.
Setting Up: The Studio Environment
The studio is set up specifically for professional headshots, with lighting rigs positioned to create clean, flattering, consistent light. You won't be expected to stand in harsh overhead light or awkward angles. Everything is adjusted to work for you.
Before I start shooting, I'll show you what the setup looks like on the monitor so you can see exactly how the lighting falls. Most clients are pleasantly surprised at this stage. The setup removes a lot of the self-consciousness of "wondering how it looks."
The Shoot: What Direction Looks Like
You will be directed through the entire session. This is important to understand if you're camera-shy: you won't be left to figure out how to hold your chin, where to set your shoulders, or where to look. That's my job.
Direction typically includes:
- Head position and chin angle: small adjustments that make a significant difference
- Shoulder and body positioning: which direction to angle, how much weight to shift
- Expression coaching: how to generate a natural, relaxed expression that doesn't look forced
- Eye direction: where to look depending on the feel you're going for
I'll show you the images throughout the shoot. You'll be able to see what's working and what you'd like to adjust in real time. This isn't a surprise at the end.
The majority of my clients describe themselves as uncomfortable in front of a camera before their session. Most of them leave surprised at how different the experience was from what they expected. The difference is direction. When someone tells you exactly where to look and what to do, the self-consciousness fades quickly. You don't need to know how to pose. That's what I'm here for.
Session Length by Package
- Express Package (20 minutes): One polished look, focused and efficient. Ideal if you know what you need and want a streamlined experience. Delivers 2 final retouched images.
- Classic Package (45 minutes): A comfortable middle ground. Time to settle in, try a couple of looks, and land on your best. Delivers 3 final retouched images.
- Signature Package (60 minutes): Time to warm up, try different expressions and angles, and land on your best. Room for outfit changes. Delivers 5 final retouched images.
- Executive Package (90 minutes): The most relaxed experience: includes a professional makeup session at the start, multiple outfits, and full direction throughout. Delivers 10 final retouched images.
After the Shoot: What Happens Next
After your session, I'll review and cull the full take, then send you a private gallery of proofs with the best images from the day. You'll select your favorites based on the number of retouched images included in your package. If you'd like additional images beyond what's included, you can purchase them directly from the gallery.
Once your selections are in, I retouch them. Retouching is natural. The goal is to remove temporary distractions (a blemish, a stray hair, uneven lighting) without altering your actual appearance.
Your final, retouched images are delivered through that same gallery within seven to ten business days of your selections. From there, you can download, share, and use them across all your professional platforms.
The Goal of Every Session
A great headshot isn't just a technically correct photograph. It's one where the person in the frame looks like a credible, confident version of themselves. Not stiff, not performed, not over-retouched.
Getting there is a process, not a moment. It takes a few minutes to warm up, a few adjustments to find your angles, and a little direction to find the expression that reads right. Every session is built around that process.
